The ties
between Alghero and what is considered to be the mother-country,
Barcelona, are very strong even today. The catalan language is still
spoken and can be read on street names, heard in popular songs and used in
religious ceremonies.Numerous archeological discoveries in the region
testify the presence of man from the Neolithic Age (6000-5000 B.C.);the
over one hundred "Nuraghi" found throughout the territory are
proof of settlements
from the Nuragic Age. Other Nuragic, Phoenician, Punic and Roman remains
are located in the area.
The "Italian-Catalan town" or "Barceloneta
of Sardinya" , according to some historians dates back to the year
1102 others believe it was founded in the second half of the XIII century
by the Doria , a powerful family from Genoa.
The strategic position , the fortified ramparts and towers made the town a
stronghold that was the ambition
of the Catalans who conquered and repopulated the town. Alghero became an
important regular trading port on the routes to Cagliari and Sicily. |
